Hey there, and thanks for your interest in Public Philosophy Week 2025! We're super excited that you're joining us because your participation is what keeps making this event bigger and better each year.

This year's event is set to take place during the week of 3/30-4/5.

Our main avenue for spreading the word about the event will be through the website. We'll supplement it with physical posters and social media buzz, just like we've done before. But we could really use your help to keep things consistent and on time with all these materials. Because managing a website with content coming in from various folks is a bit of a juggle, we've whipped up some handy guides to make your life easier when creating and handling your presentation. Keep this link handy—it's your shortcut for submitting and planning your gig. We'll keep it updated so that it's your one-stop-shop for all things presenter-related.

What we need from you

BY MARCH 1st

  • Event title (Brevity is good)

  • Event description (300 word max)

  • Presenter (s)

  • Profile pic/headshot for each presenter (1000px wide)

ONGOING

  • Keep us posted on any venue or timing changes. Accurate info on the website is crucial, and we want to avoid people relying on random social media details.

What you'll get from us

  • A sleek web presence and an event URL for promoting your gig. Your event's title and a snappy blurb will grace the website's homepage, while the event page will feature a more detailed description.

  • Local posters to drum up excitement.

  • Help securing event locations.

  • Social media shout-outs for your presentation.

Tips for picking a venue

  • Weekday events between 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM usually get the most folks.

  • Places with grub and drinks tend to be crowd-pleasers!

  • If you are looking for a crowd, choose a venue that will advertise your event.

How to take a headshot

DO

DON’T

  • Subject should be on a neutral / white background

  • Subject should be eye level with camera

  • Expression should be natural for the person

  • Shoot with the largest file size your phone can handle.

  • Subject should be lit from the front and the lighting should be relatively even, creating a sense of volume

  • For our purposes we need head and shoulders. Shooting with a little extra room around the subject gives us room to manipulate in layout.

  • Wear simple clothing without branding or complex graphics. This image is not a good example of that

Don’t shoot against a window or any other source of back lighting.

Below is quick guide to assist you in getting a photo that we will use to promote your event on social media. Once you have completed your photo according to our guide, please email it to publicphilosophyweek@gmail.com, using the native format offered by your camera. Apple is HEIC and Android is HEIF or JPG. Please send the largest file size available.

If you’d like help with your photo, our photographer Rory would be happy to coordinate a time to take the photo for you. He's typically free on Tuesdays and Thursdays except 1:00-3:00, and Wednesdays before 10:00 and after 1:00. You can email him at  rory.stein@uvm.edu. The photo session shouldn't take more than five minutes.

Don’t shoot against a busy or complex background.
